The dressing room was huge and the fact that I was sitting in it sent a tingle of excitement down my spine. I believed European Cup finals were really for the elite, the great players, but getting to a FA Cup final always seemed like something I could achieve, something I could strive for, a goal that could one day come true. That day arrived in May 1990. I was twenty-seven years old. Against all the odds I was part of a Crystal Palace team who were about to play in an FA Cup final against Manchester United. I knew that it was, without doubt, the biggest day of my footballing life.
