People and Power in Byzantium investigates the pressures that shaped Byzantine culture and people, from societal position to self-image. Alexander Kazhdan and Giles Constable consider Homo byzantinus from new perspectives to understand how Byzantine society worked and how this helps in appreciating the modern world.
Alexander Kazhdan (1922-1997) was an immensely prolific scholar, with works including the three-volume Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium. He was a senior research associate at Dumbarton Oaks.
