Western democracies face various threats which challenge social cohesion and democratic institutions. Structural changes such as digitalisation and climate change put strong pressure on democratic societies. In public discourse and in academia, all these events are often referred to as turning points. Yet, turning points remain poorly defined and conceptually underdetermined in political science. This book aims to provide conceptual clarity.
